Las Vegas Casino and Hotel IT: 24/7 Network Reliability for Hospitality

Summit DNC EngineeringApril 8, 202610 min read

Las Vegas is unlike any other market in the world for IT infrastructure. A casino-resort is simultaneously a hotel, a food and beverage operation, a retail center, an entertainment venue, and a regulated gaming floor — all running on a single integrated network that must never go down.

Gaming Network Requirements

Nevada Gaming Control Board regulations create specific technical requirements for casino networks: - Gaming floor systems (slot machines, ETGs, cage systems) must run on an isolated network segment with no general internet access - All gaming system communications must be encrypted and logged - Network access control is required — only authorized gaming devices may connect to the gaming VLAN - Real-time monitoring and alerting for any unauthorized access attempt or device addition is mandatory - Gaming system logs must be retained for a minimum of 2 years and be accessible for regulatory audit

Surveillance Network Architecture

A major casino property may operate 3,000–5,000 IP cameras — one of the most demanding surveillance deployments in any industry. The surveillance network requires: - Dedicated surveillance VLAN completely isolated from gaming and guest systems - 10GbE uplinks from IDF-level aggregation switches to the surveillance server cluster - RAID-6 or RAID-Z3 storage with 30+ day retention for all cameras - Redundant NVR servers with automatic failover — surveillance cannot have a single point of failure - Real-time video analytics (facial recognition, behavior analytics) with dedicated GPU servers

Guest Network Experience

Las Vegas resort guests expect exceptional Wi-Fi performance. Modern resort Wi-Fi design: - Wi-Fi 6E with high AP density — one AP per 8–10 guest rooms, additional APs in pool, convention, and gaming areas - Tiered bandwidth: complimentary at 50–100Mbps, premium tiers up to 500Mbps for business travelers - Seamless roaming through the property using 802.11r/k/v with a single SSID - Bandwidth management to prevent one guest room from affecting adjacent rooms

Hotel Operations Network

Back-of-house hotel operations include PMS (property management systems), F&B point-of-sale, access control for guest rooms and staff areas, digital signage, and VOIP communications: - Dedicated VLANs for PMS, POS, and guest room door lock systems - PoE switches at every floor IDF to support room door lock controllers and IP phones - Digital signage network with centralized content management - IP paging system integrated with the property's PA infrastructure

Power and Uptime

A casino that goes offline costs hundreds of thousands of dollars per minute. Power infrastructure for hospitality IT: - N+2 UPS redundancy for core switching and server infrastructure - On-site generator tested weekly with automatic transfer in under 10 seconds - Dual fiber circuits from different carrier providers entering the building on diverse paths - SD-WAN aggregating primary and backup ISP circuits for all inter-property traffic
