What causes electrical surges?

Surges come from external sources (lightning, utility grid switching, nearby industrial equipment) and internal sources (HVAC compressors, elevators, large motors starting). Internal surges account for up to 80% of all surge events in commercial buildings.

Why do we need surge protection if we have a UPS?

A UPS protects connected equipment from brief outages and voltage regulation, but large surges can damage or degrade UPS components. Panel-level surge protection reduces the surge magnitude before it reaches the UPS, extending its lifespan and protecting its electronics.

What is the difference between Type 1 and Type 2 surge protectors?

Type 1 SPDs install at the service entrance (before the main breaker) and handle the largest surges including direct lightning strikes. Type 2 SPDs install at branch panels and provide secondary protection. A complete system uses both types in a coordinated layered approach.

How do we know if a surge protector has failed?

Quality SPDs include LED status indicators that show green when protection is active and red or off when the device needs replacement. Network-connected SPDs can send email or SNMP alerts when they absorb a significant surge or reach end-of-life.

Do surge protectors wear out?

Yes. Surge protectors use MOVs (Metal Oxide Varistors) that degrade with each surge event. After absorbing enough energy, the MOV can no longer clamp surges effectively. Status indicators and surge counters help determine when replacement is needed.
